Mukilteo City Council remains divided over the issue of whether to affirm Mukilteo as a diverse and inclusive community. A workshop was held recently to discuss whether a resolution was needed.
Some councilors (Lord, Emery, Cook) and Mayor Gregerson support a resolution while others (Whelpley, Wheeler) feels it’s not necessary since police already operate under the policy of not asking about immigration status. President Champion commented that he’d had more feedback from constituents about why it was being done rather than if the City needed the resolution.
Since the state of Washington has already been declared a “sanctuary” it is unclear why various cities in our area are also calling themselves Sanctuary Cities (e.g., Seattle, Everett, and Edmonds to name a few). The debate will continue and Councilor Emery is currently drafting a resolution to present at a future meeting.
